The Rise of Darker Kitchens

As the world of kitchen design continues to evolve, we're seeing a significant shift in preferences and trends. While white kitchens have long been a staple of modern design, there's a growing movement towards embracing darker, bolder shades. Colours like navy blue, dark grey, and even black are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason.

In this blog post, we'll explore why darker kitchens are making waves, debunk some common misconceptions, and showcase how these stylish choices can transform any kitchen space.

Debunking the Myths

A common misconception about darker kitchens is that they make spaces feel smaller and more cramped. However, when designed thoughtfully, dark kitchens can actually make a space feel more expansive and inviting.

The key is in the details—contrasting worktops, strategic lighting, and complementary colours can all help achieve the same 'wow factor’ of a larger kitchen.

Take this Hartforth Blue kitchen project as an example.

The Appeal of Darker Kitchens

One primary reason homeowners gravitate towards darker kitchens is their undeniable elegance and sophistication. Dark cabinetry adds depth and richness that lighter shades simply can't match. These kitchens make a bold statement, creating a focal point that can elevate the entire look and feel of a home.

Dark kitchens are incredibly versatile and can be tailored to suit any design preference, whether modern or traditional.

Modern Kitchens with Darker Shades

In our Eskbank project, we demonstrated how dark kitchens can still feel bright and inviting. By pairing graphite shaker cabinets with white worktops, crisp white walls, and pastel accessories, we achieved a fresh and airy atmosphere that defies the notion that dark equals gloomy. This project showcases the perfect balance of a traditional bespoke kitchen with modern elements, and the blue cabinetry is the ideal backdrop for this.
Darker kitchens can still deliver for those who prefer a more traditional look. In another project, we combined heritage green cabinetry with a dark splashback and contrasting lighter cabinets to create a classic, homely feel. This approach adds depth and character, making the kitchen a true standout feature in the home. You can see the details of this project here.

Designing Your Perfect Dark Kitchen

When considering a darker kitchen, it's important to consider the overall aesthetic and how the various elements will work together. Here are some tips to ensure your dark kitchen is both beautiful and functional:

  1. Contrast is key: Pair dark cabinets with lighter worktops and backsplashes to create a balanced look.
  2. Light it up: Ensure ample lighting to prevent the space from feeling too enclosed. Under-cabinet lighting, pendant lights, and strategically placed fixtures can make a big difference.
  3. Accessorise wisely: Use bright or pastel accessories to add pops of colour and keep the space feeling lively.
  4. Mix materials: Combining different materials and textures can add interest and depth to your kitchen design.
