Creating a Kitchen Wish List
If you're looking for a new kitchen, the first step is determining what you need from your new space.
And the best place to start is with a wish list…
A wish list is the perfect way to write down what you can't live without and what you'd like if the budget allows. It will give you a clearer picture before you sit down with a designer to discuss your plans more seriously.

A wish list is the perfect way to write down what you can't live without and what you'd like if the budget allows. It will give you a clearer picture before you sit down with a designer to discuss your plans more seriously.
Start by assessing your current kitchen.
Firstly, take a notepad and pen, walk around your existing kitchen, and write down a list of pros and cons of what works and doesn't work on a day-to-day basis.
Pay close attention to your current storage set-up, layout, seating, appliance position, etc., and identify any frustrations with your current kitchen.
Do you have awkward corner cupboards, for instance? Do you have adequately organised recycling and bin storage? Do you have the right lighting or ambience for evening tasks? Do you want to integrate your appliances?
Once you've made a list of what doesn't work for you, it's time to move on to what brings you joy in your kitchen. It could be the position of your appliances, worktop space, or seating arrangement.
The best time to make this list is when you are using your kitchen, so keep your pen and paper handy and jot down anything that pops up whilst you're cooking, washing up, or tidying away so you can note anything that comes up.
Another thing to think about is things you like in another kitchen that you'd like to adapt on your own; this could be a friend's or family's kitchen or even a kitchen you've used on holiday.

How will you use your new kitchen?
Next, think through how you want to use your new kitchen over the next few years. Do you want it to be open and multi-functional? Is an island or seating important for socialising with your family?
Consider your current set-up. For example, do you cook a lot? Are there small children or animals in your household? If so, you might want more durable kitchen materials that are easier to clean and maintain.
If you want a really easy-clean solution, a handleless matt kitchen with flush-fit appliances, touch controls, quartz worktops and splashbacks would be perfect.

Make sure you get everything you want.
Finally, it's important to remember that a kitchen is often a lifetime investment, so it's important not to cut corners or risk feeling a few years down the line like you wish you'd have done things differently.
If your budget allows, consider your 'I'd like' items. Appliances like Quooker taps, downdraft hobs, and combi-ovens might seem like a stretch of the budget you don't want to consider right now, but will you regret it later?
